A big new update is coming to GTA Online, one that promises to be “the largest and most extravagant addition“ to Grand Theft Auto so far.

The game‘s Casino update is expected to release at some point over the summer, and developers Rockstar Games have been teasing a few details.

The update will introduce a brand new location to Vinewood, the Hollywood-esque area of GTA Online’s expansive San Andreas map.

“You may have noticed a new construction project taking shape,” said Rockstar, “at a small building nestled between Vinewood Hills and the scenic backdrop of the Tataviam Mountains.”

What’s new in the update?

The Diamond Casino -amp; Resort will be “the largest mass entertainment complex of its kind in Southern San Andreas,” according to Rockstar, who also describe the new location as “a brand-new luxury destination.”

“The Diamond Casino -amp; Resort will feature lavish amenities,” they say, “exclusive shopping, first-class entertainment and state-of-the-art gaming facilities.”

“Whether you’re having a night on the town with friends or seeking a brief solitary escape, The Diamond Casino -amp; Resort is open to one and all.

“Come experience the tasteful luxury that the Diamond has to offer including best-in-class concierge, valet parking, the exhilaration of spinning the Lucky Wheel for a chance at life-changing prizes, a finely curated selection of spirits at the bars and lounges, a range of sophisticated table games and much more.”

How the new casino will actually affect gameplay remains to be seen, but it’s likely that gambling and ‘table’ games will be a big focus.

Perhaps you’ll be able to gamble real-world money on games like roulette, with payouts being delivered in the form of in-game rewards.

In an era of loot box trepidation, such a move would make many players uncomfortable, so perhaps Rockstar will give the casino area its own, new currency to stop any mad over-spending.

The mention of “life-changing prizes” suggests it may be more than just money up for grabs at the casino; perhaps there will be certain cars and weapons attainable only be beating the house?

And that “first-class entertainment” could mean real world entertainers like bands or comedians end up making appearances in the game.

2008’s Grand Theft Auto IV featured performances from Ricky Gervais and Frankie Boyle, fully animated with virtual likeness of the comedians, so could a similar feature be coming to GTA Online with the update?

GTA’s After Hours update added real-world DJs to the game, and with EDM producer Marshmello recently hosting a huge gig inside Fortnite, live in-game entertainment is en vogue right now.

When can I play it?

No release date has been offered by Rockstar beyond this summer, who say the update is “coming soon”.

“Stay tuned for more details and an inside look at the largest and most extravagant addition to the sprawling metropolis of Los Santos, coming soon,

You can actually visit the casino now, or at least the location where it is being built. It’s right next to Vinewood Racetrack, and you’ll see some construction work going on around it.

In other GTA news, a recent ‘leak’ from a Reddit user claiming to have insider knowledge shed some light on what we might be able to expect from the next GTA.

According to the rumours, it’s all hands on deck for Rockstar’s GTA 6 (code named, ‘Project Americas’); it’s not just one or two studios working on it, but all across the developer’s global portfolio of studios.

The game is reportedly set in both Vice City (the GTA universe’s take on Miami) and a new fictional location based on Rio de Janeiro, but there will also be “some linear missions taking place in Liberty City,” which is GTA’s version of New York.

“Also been recently hearing about Cuba,” said JackOLantern1982, “but I ain’t sure?”

The series will also reportedly revert back to having just one playable protagonist after GTA V featured three that players could swap between, and this character will be “male, not female, despite supposed leaks.”

GTA 6’s narrative is thought to span across both the 70s and 80s, and will see you play an up-and-coming drug lord-wannabe, starting off as “a grunt doing runs as a cocaine smuggler” from Vice City to the new South American area, before making connections with big time drug lords and making your way up.”

To reflect the game’s expansive story, buildings and vehicles are said to change over the eras, so certain cars will only be available in certain time periods.

According to JackOLantern1982, there is “no ETA on a release date,” and the game is next gen only, so won’t be releasing for the current PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.

The game “is now [Rockstar’s] primary focus,” and “is still in Pre-Alpha so names, locations, details could and probably will change.”
