What is World of Warcraft Classic?
World of Warcraft Classic refers to the state of WoW prior to The Burning Crusade expansion pack. WoW Classic featured tougher and simpler gameplay.
On January 16, 2007, the MMORPG World of Warcraft got one of its first major expansion sets called The Burning Crusade which made a lot of changes to the game such as adding new playable races, a new battleground, new PvP objectives, and more. Future expansion packs brought more changes until World of Warcraft was changed massively from what it originally was.
The original WoW had a massive fan base but after Blizzard started introducing more content and gameplay that deviated a lot from what WoW used to be. The game saw a massive drop in numbers. 14 percent of its players, which is about 1.3 million players, left the game in the short span of three months.
WoW Classic—an underdog:
Fans of the original WoW then started creating and hosting their own private servers that featured the “vanilla” or 1.12 version of the game called World of Warcraft Classic. Two of the most prominent of these servers was Nostalrius and Felmyst, which saw the likes of Sodapoppin, JonTron, Boogie2988, LinusTechTips, The_Lazy_Peon, WowKungen and many others.
In August of 2016, Blizzard started a massive crackdown on these severs, shutting them down, in order to “protect against intellectual property infringement.”
Rise of WoW Classic:
Soon after the crackdown, Blizzard started shutting down the fan-run WoW classic servers including Nostalrius. This lead to fans starting a petition that urged Blizzard to create their own legacy servers for WoW Classic. The petition was highly successful with over 280,050 supporters.
After over a decade of constant pleading from Warcraft fans, the company finally listened and gave fans what they wanted. In November of 2017, Blizzard officially announced the return of World of War Classic servers at BlizzCon.
What WoW Classic’s Re-launch Means:
Blizzard’s Word of Warcraft Classic release date now officially announced, it seems like an excellent time for both veteran players and for those who want to get into the massive fantasy MMORPG. Players can meanwhile take part in the beta stress tests and give their valuable feedback to Blizzard so they can improve Word of Warcraft Classic before its launch on August 27th, 2019.
