Mortal Kombat 11 is just a few days away from launch and reportedly the game is a completionist nightmare. According to a report, Mortal Kombat 11 requires an always-online connection to unlock achievements and access to some of the game’s features.
According to a Reddit post, a NetherRealm developer tweeted that Mortal Kombat 11 will require an always-online connection to access unlockables, The Krypt, Towers of Time mode, earning gear, and trophies/achievements.
The tweet has since been deleted. The developers are essentially holding the game ransom to make it always online. For a fighting game that has a multiplayer component, locking single-player features behind an always-online connection doesn’t make any sense.
Not only that, NetherRealm Studios is essentially locking away game modes behind this absurd requirement. This could essentially be to promote microtransactions since they can only be purchased if a player is online.
Also, this is a huge shift from Injustice 2 which allowed players access to such features in offline mode. We won’t know the true reason for requiring an always-online connection until the studio itself explains. However, we all know how publishers tend to delve into anti-consumer practices just to make a buck.
This isn’t the first time publisher Warner Bros has done something like this. Previously, WB inserted microtransactions and loot boxes in Shadow of War, a purely single-player tile.
Interestingly, developer Monolith Productions removed microtransactions from the game a few months later. According to the devs, they removed microtransactions to fully realize the game’s vision.
Not only that, in the aftermath of microtransaction removal, the game had to be rebalanced as initially it was designed to be grindy so that players would buy loot boxes to cut the grind.
Mortal Kombat 11 is a fighting video game developed by NetherRealm Studios. The game will launch on April 23, 2019, for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
